Beauty is Tested

Version 1 named the wrong lever. It is not the format. It is the product category — and the channel is not growing at all.

49%views from 2 videos

This replaces version 1. In the first report I named format as the main lever — "retailer finds beat dupes." Digging further, that is wrong. The real lever is product category, and format is secondary. The error is dissected in section 02.

Three additional niche passes were run for this version that did not exist in v1. Version 1 is still online here for comparison.

01First, the sober part

The channel is not growing. This has to be said before any recommendation, because it changes what kind of advice is even appropriate.

MeasureValue
Median of the first 10 videos394
Median of the last 10 videos476
Two best videos49% of all channel views
Median of the remaining 34507

36 videos in 2.5 months is roughly one every two days, which is a high rate. But the weekly medians bounce with no trend at all:

124 → 631 → 191 → 3,608 → 1,262 → 1,540 → 475 → 350 → 1,953 → 977

The channel has not found a repeatable formula. It has had two lucky hits, and almost everything else lives around 500 views. That makes the job "find something that works at all," not "amplify what works" — those are different jobs with different playbooks.

02The correction: category, not format

Version 1 said retailer finds carry a median of 3,482 against 614 for dupes, therefore push retailer finds. The numbers were right. The conclusion was not.

The spread inside the retailer-find format is 108× — from 25,148 down to 231. A median across seven videos with that much internal variance predicts nothing.

The channel accidentally ran a clean experiment

Three videos, one identical title template, three different products:

ViewsCategoryTitle
25,148makeupWARNING: Costco Is Quietly Selling Real Tom Ford Makeup
8,360skincareWARNING: Costco Is Quietly Selling $800 Luxury Skincare
977fragranceWARNING: Costco Is Quietly Selling Real Gucci Perfume

One hook, one channel, one period, 26× spread. The wording never changed. The product did.

Category economics across all 36 videos

CategoryVideosMedianBestShare of views
MAKEUP112,20525,14867%
Fragrance41,0101,3973%
Skincare115398,36024%
Other52681,3782%
Devices (gua sha, LED)11171170%
Supplements / health41137551%

Makeup and skincare have exactly the same number of videos — 11 each — but makeup carries a median 4× higher and two thirds of everything the channel has ever earned.

That is the lever. Format, whether "dupe" or "Costco find," is an amplifier sitting on top of the category, not the cause.

What survives from v1: a benefit promise beats a fear promise. The exposés — "you're being poisoned," "you're being robbed" — are 6 videos at a median of 133, 990 views in total. That is 17% of output for 1% of the result. Cut them or repackage them.

03What Tim's doctrine says about this

Two queries into the coaching base, aimed specifically at what changed in v2.

Tim · on a channel that isn't growing

"Under 10 videos = too early to judge. 15+ with under 1,000 views = check execution (script, thumbnail, hook). If competitors aren't getting views either, pivot."

Both halves apply here, and they point somewhere this teardown did not. The median of the other 34 videos is 507, well under the threshold. And the competitors are very much getting views — 1.4M, 750K, 524K, 239K, several of them at Tim's own subscriber count.

This cuts against the headline of v2. By Tim's rule, a 507 median with thriving competitors is an execution problem — script, thumbnail, hook — before it is a category problem. Changing which product you point the camera at will not fix a hook that does not land.

Both can be true at once: makeup genuinely outperforms skincare 4×, and the whole channel still sits below the line where category choice is the binding constraint. The honest sequencing is fix execution and category together, not category alone — and the execution half is the one this analysis cannot see, because thumbnails and retention are not in the public API.

Tim · niche = format × market

"Your YouTube niche is a combination of Format plus Market. A format is the framework used to deliver information. A market is defined by the target audience — fitness, finance, space, history. Formats are endless and new ones emerge every day; markets are limited and grow slowly."

That reframes the v1-versus-v2 argument rather than settling it one way. v1 optimised the format axis. v2 found the market axis mattered more. Tim's framework contains both, and the channel had been holding format roughly constant while varying the market — which is exactly why category showed up as the dominant signal in the data.

04The biggest empty square: mature-skin tutorials

The channel has zero videos of this type. A dedicated niche pass shows why that is a mistake.

"Hooded eyes" appears in three of those six titles. It is a narrow, repeatable sub-topic with enormous demand — and it lands squarely in the channel's winning category (makeup) rather than its losing ones (skincare, supplements).

In a fresh 200K+ window this niche has exactly one competitor (@Doctorly, 3.58M, a dermatologist). It is not crowded.

Channels at Tim's size that broke through

These matter more than the list of million-subscriber accounts, because they prove a reachable ceiling.

06Adjacent niches, with verdicts

Each one checked with its own dedicated pass, not guessed at.

07What to do, in order

  1. Shift weight onto makeup. Median 2,205 versus 539 for skincare at an equal number of videos. This is the main lever, not the choice between "dupe" and "Costco find."
  2. Open the tutorial format, starting with hooded eyes. Zero videos today; @KellyNg9 did 1.4M with 11,000 subscribers. It hits both the winning category and an unoccupied format.
  3. Cut the exposés (6 videos → 990 views) or repackage as benefit: not "your deodorant is poisoning you" but "7 products you're overpaying for."
  4. Switch the retailer hook from comparison to insider. "Costco beauty secrets only employees know" instead of "Costco vs Sephora." On the adjacent niche that flip is worth several multiples.
  5. Stop making fragrance videos. A dead end confirmed twice over.
  6. Leave the length alone. 22 minutes is the median for both the best and the average videos.
  7. Keep "Over 50" in the title. Present in all five best performers.
The step this list is missing

Per Tim's rule in section 03, none of the above addresses the 507 median directly. Before or alongside all seven, the script, hook and thumbnail need a hard look — that is where his framework points when 15+ videos sit under 1,000 views while competitors thrive. This teardown cannot see any of the three from public data, which is precisely why it is listed as the blind spot in section 09.

09What was verified, and what wasn't

Verified

  • All 36 videos via YouTube Data API — views, duration, dates
  • Category and format splits computed, not estimated
  • Five Ultimate Request passes: niche core, retailer hook, tutorials, retailer beyond beauty, fragrance
  • Local corpus of 37,244 channels
  • Two queries into Tim's coaching base

Not verified — stated plainly

  • Retention, CTR, traffic sources — absent from the public API. Everything here rests on views. If Studio shows skincare holds attention better than makeup, section 07.1 needs revisiting
  • Thumbnails were never seen. The failures could be coming from them rather than from category
  • Small samples. Costco is 3 videos, devices is 1, tutorials is 0. The "makeup beats skincare" finding stands on 11 versus 11 with a 4× gap — that is the most reliable thing here. Anything resting on n=3 is a hypothesis
  • An earlier pass is flagged blocked_fetch_events=1; that competitor list may be incomplete
  • The channel is 2.5 months old. The medians will keep moving

What to open in YouTube Studio first, given everything above:

  1. Impressions and CTR across the whole channel. High impressions with low clicks means the thumbnails and hooks are the bottleneck, and the category argument moves down the priority list. Low impressions means YouTube never pushed the videos at all.
  2. Stayed to watch — Tim's hero metric. Compare makeup against skincare directly. If skincare holds attention better, the category verdict is about packaging, not about the subject.
  3. "Content suggesting this video" on the two outliers. Tim calls this a gold mine: it shows which channels the 49% actually came from.
